NetWitness appliance FAN0029 error as Fan xx is either removed, incorrectly installed, or not present

Issue

The Dell appliance iDRAC shows that there is a Critical Fan issue.

The iDRAC log shows that there is Fan error FAN00229, "The fan that is identified in the message is either removed, incorrectly installed, or not present".

The iDRAC hardware report of the fans in the appliance shows the fan that is identified in the message has an incorrect status.

Cause

The Dell appliance fan may need re-seating to ensure that there is proper electrical contact within the chassis, or it has failed.


Resolution

Confirm that the Customer on-site person has the skills to open the NetWitness appliance and re-seating the fan that is mentioned in the iDRAC message before giving permission to open the chassis.

After opening the NetWitness appliance on the inside the lid is a diagram showing the location of the various internal components.

In the above example the iDRAC message refers to Fan 7A and 7B, the single Fan 7 unit includes both Fan 7A/7B.

The row of fans will have a number identifying each one, find the fan number that is mentioned in the iDRAC message.

Remove and fully re-insert the Fan.

After re-seating the Fan, re-assemble the appliance and check if the issue is resolved.

If the issue persists, then proceed to order an RMA replacement appliance.
