Security Analytics 10.4.X and higher: Adding a new appliance fails with Unknown Error Occured when processing the request error.
Issue
When adding a new appliance per the following document:http://sadocs.emc.com/0_en-us/090_10.4_User_Guide/120_ApplServConf/00_ApplServGSGuide/10_ReqProc/10_AddAppl
...the 'Discover' button in Administration->Appliances does not reveal any new appliances.
Manual attempts also fail and returns the following error in a pop-up window.
"Unknown Error Occured when processing the request"
(Note: 'Occurred is spelled as 'Occured' in the error message.)
Cause
This issue can occur when the Puppet DB already contains an entry with the node ID of the new appliance.Resolution
Please follow the steps below to resolve the issue.1. Log in to the new appliance using the root account and note the node ID.
/etc/puppet/scripts/node_id.py
The rest of steps need to be performed on the SA server.
1. Log in to the SA server using the root account and find or obtain h2 tools JAR file.
1a. Finding on appliance and copy to /root
[root]# find / name h2*.jar

1b. Download from Internet and SCP file to /root on appliance
The following command works if SA server has internet access, otherwise need to download file using web browser and transfer to appliance.
wget http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/com/h2database/h2/1.3.172/h2-1.3.172.jar
2. Stop the jetty service.
stop jettysrv
3. Navigate to the DB directory.
cd /var/lib/netwitness/uax/db
4. Back up the current database.
cp platform.h2.db platform.h2.db.backup
5. Open a connection to the DB.
java -cp h2-1.3.172.jar org.h2.tools.Shell -url jdbc:h2:file:platform
6. Display the entries under the IDENTITY column from PUPPETPROVISION and APPLIANCEDESCRIPTOR tables and confirm if the node ID from step #1 appears.
select IDENTITY from PUPPETPROVISION;
select IDENTITY from APPLIANCEDESCRIPTOR;
7. If the node is found in step #6, run the following commands to delete the entries from the two tables.
delete from PUPPETPROVISION where IDENTITY = 'Node_ID';
delete from APPLIANCEDESCRIPTOR where IDENTITY = 'Node_ID';
Note: Replace Node_ID with the actual node ID noted in step #1 surrounded by single quotes.
8. Close the connection to the database.
exit
9. Start the jetty service.
start jettysrv
10. Log in to SA UI and follow the normal provision steps to add the appliance.
Note: If the appliance is added but cannot be enabled, try 'Remove and Repurpose Appliance' to remove any remnant data of the node.
